
UPSC (UNION PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISION )EXAMS:
Public Service Commission of India anually conducts exams like Civil Services Exam (CSE)to recruit candidates for different prestigious civil services and posts available in the Government of India such as Indian Administrative Service(IAS), IFS.IRS etc.
UPSC Exam is taken on an average by lakhs of candidates every year . Due to the tough competition and the difficult level of the exam, it is considered to be one of the most difficult examinations in India.

Exam Pattern
- Preliminary Exam (objective):
- Prelims – The Civil Services Preliminary exam comprises of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each (General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II). The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type. The marks in prelims will not be counted for final ranking, but just for qualification for the main exam.
- Main Exam (written):
- Mains – The written examination (main) will consist of the nine papers, but only 7 papers will be counted for final merit ranking. For the rest two papers, the candidate should secure minimum marks prescribed by the commission each year.
- Interview (personality test):
- Interview – The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his/her career. He/she will be asked questions on matters of general interest.
- A candidate’s rank in Civil Service Exam depends only on the mark scored in Main and Interview. The main exam has 1750 marks while interview has 275 marks.
Eligibility
- Educational qualification:
- The interested candidates have to be a graduate from any discipline from a recognized university. Appearing candidates in final year can also apply.
- Age Limit:
- The minimum age to appear for upsc Exam is 21 years. This means that the candidate must have at least 21 years of age on 1st August of that given year when the exam is held.
- Upper age limit for General category is 32 years, for OBC it is 35 years,SC/ST: 37 Years.
- Upper age limit for Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof is 35 years.
- Upper age limit for General category is 32 years, for OBC it is 35 years,SC/ST: 37 Years.
- Upper age limit for Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service is 37
- Upper age limit for blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons (general category)is 42 years.
- Number of attempts:
- There are some restrictions on the number of times this exam can be taken, which again is different for different categories.
- The number of attempts for IAS exam for General Category is 6 attempts for OBC is 9 attempts , for SC/ST: unlimited attempts till 37 years of age. Physically Handicapped /disabled candidates belonging to General category will get the benefit of 9 attempts till the age prescribed by UPSC – 42 year
- Nationality:
- For the IAS, IFS & IPS, a candidate must be a citizen of India. For the IRS and other services, a candidate must be one of the following:
- A citizen of India.
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Syllabus
- Preliminary exam:

There are two types of Papers- Qualifying Papers and Papers that will be counted for Merit formation. The former part will consist of two language exams, one of candidate’s choice and other of English. The latter part will consist of 7 papers and will have about 300 questions each. Mains will comprise of both essay writing and subjective type questions. The sum total of all papers and the score secured in the direct interview will be used for ranking of candidate.
